Reflections on a thought provoking evening held by Swellendam Heritage Association.
Last night’s talk by Frederik De Ridder, “The End of the World as he Knew it: Jan Smuts' Philosophy of Peace & the Dying of the Light,” was a truly memorable occasion. Held at our beloved Drostdy Schuur, the event drew an enthusiastic and engaged audience. It was so lovely to see the room filled with both familiar and new faces.
Frederik offered a rich and moving exploration of Jan Smuts’ philosophy of holism, his nuanced understanding of global peace, and his deeply human attempts to navigate the tension between chaos and order. The insights into Smuts' correspondence with the likes of Einstein and Whitman sparked meaningful conversation and quiet contemplation alike.
With thoughtful discussion, warm company, and a glass of wine in hand, the evening reminded us why we gather - to learn, to share, and to be inspired.
Thank you to everyone who joined us, and especially to Frederik for guiding us through such an illuminating journey.
Until next time!
